Hospice of Michigan

Through the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa, St Luke’s Hospice was linked with Hospice of Michigan (HOM) during late 2007 as they were considered to be very similar. The similarity was based on the fact that they roughly serve the same number of patients . The biggest difference however lies in the fact that HOM serves 47 counties in the State of Michigan whereas St Luke'sHospice only serves the greater part of Cape Town. Another big difference is that St Luke's Hospice has 260 staff members, 180 permanent and 80 part time staff members whereas HOM employs 600 full- and part-time employees.

We are pleased to report that our partnership is growing from strength to strength even although the communication between the two hospices is predominately via the internet. We had one teleconference with them and also recently received a visit from someone indirectly linked to HOM. Not only have they established a committee to assist us with fundraising activities but we have already received three donations from them! As they have shown interest in the HIV/AIDS work that we are involved with, this money was utilised to facilitate the work of our home based care givers, who are working with these patients.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RECENT DONATION FROM HOSPICE OF MICHIGAN

On behalf of our Board, management team and patients, I herewith wish to officially acknowledge the receipt of the latest donation from Michigan Hospice of the amount of $4,500 USD.

At the current exchange rate, the $4,500 came to 33,136 ZAR (Rands) which is once again awonderful amount to receive from any single donor. We are going to use the money for exactly the same programme as last year as that is where we feel it is worth the most.

This donation will be utilised to provide our 40 (5 more than last year) home based carers with the necessary tools to provide care to about 268 HIV/AIDS patients in our Khayelitsha and Gugulethu areas. The “tools” referred to include transport fares, mobile phone vouchers, thermometers, disposable cloves, etc. This donation will enable us to spend an additional ZAR 829 on each carer for the year.

We would like to thank Hospice of Michigan once again for their invaluable support.
