How to become a Hospice volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering your services you may contact Dawn on 021 797 5335 or email dawnf@stlukes.co.za. She will explain the procedure to you as outlined below.

The first step would be to attend an orientation that will be held every 6 to 8 weeks. The orientation outlines our vision, mission, values and core business. We continue to discuss the volunteer program giving you and idea of where you will be comfortable to fit into our St Luke’s hospice family. There are many aspects of St Luke’s Hospice where volunteers are required - from admin (telephone, postage, secretarial, etc), caring (homecare, Daycare), social work (welfare, bereavement, spiritual), driving, catering, gardening/flowers, arts & crafts, charity and book shop assistants and assisting at fundraising events as well as assisting with public relations.

Should you be interested in joining us, the next step will be to complete an Application Form where after we will contact you for an interview with our Volunteer Services Manager. You will be required to commit yourself as a volunteer for the minimum of a year.

There are two types of volunteers – support (these volunteers do not have direct patient contact) and caregivers (these volunteers do have direct patient contact). If you are interested in becoming a caregiver it is compulsory that you attend an introductory hospice course that focuses on the philosophy and concept of palliative care. At the second interview the volunteer is assessed and placed in one of our care giving units e.g. Bereavement, spiritual, homecare and day hospice. If you choose to become a support volunteer you will attend further training on how to assist at reception, fundraising or the area of your choice.

Our volunteers are committed and dedicated and perform vital tasks to compliment the work of our staff. Presently our volunteers are assisting us at our head office in Kenilworth and at our 12 community hospices. Our volunteers are committed to serve those in need, in a service that is better than money can buy. Volunteering can help clarify your purpose in life it is more than “just the right thing to do”. It is the expression of a vital and essential part of who you are. Without our volunteers we would not be able to offer this palliative care service to the community of Cape Town.
